Speaker Separation

Splitting a conversation.

Turn a recording of several people into one clean track per speaker — how many voices to declare, when to let it decide, and what the labelled transcript is for.

The curriculum

Read them in this order

Each lesson assumes the one before it. The second is the one that matters — it is the only decision this tool asks you to make, and both ways of getting it wrong look like success.

  1. 01Your first separationA recording of two people in, two clean tracks out. What Speaker Separation costs, what it hands back, and why the first run should leave every setting alone.start · 4 min read
  2. 02How many speakers to declareThe one control that decides whether a separation is right. When automatic is enough, when to declare an exact number, and how to recognise the two ways it goes wrong without telling you.core · 7 min read
  3. 03Working with the separated tracksWhat one track per person makes possible that one mixed track never did, how the labelled transcript earns its place, and the fact that you take them away one at a time.core · 7 min read

What going wrong sounds like

The four ways a separation disappoints you

Two of these the tool tells you about. The other two finish as a successful job and cost you credits, and the only way to catch them is to listen — which is why every lesson here ends with playing the tracks.

The job finished and said “Only one speaker detected”.
Check the recording has two genuinely distinct voices in it. Nothing was separated, so there is nothing to salvage from this run.
The job finished and said “No separated tracks”.
Try a clearer recording. Heavy background music, a very short clip, or speech buried under noise are the usual reasons.
Two people came back on the same track.
Re-run with the exact count declared. Telling it there are two forces the split it would not otherwise commit to.
One person came back as two speakers.
Re-run with the exact count declared. If it survives that, merge the two in the transcript by reassigning the stray lines.
