Creator Audio Loudness: Best Practices for Every Platform

Why your video sounds quiet on YouTube but blares on TikTok — and the loudness targets, do/don't rules, and workflow that fix it across every platform.

Most creators master their audio once, upload everywhere, and assume it sounds the same on every platform. It doesn't. YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, and Apple Podcasts each normalize loudness to their own target — so the same file can sound balanced in your editor, thin on YouTube, and harshly compressed on TikTok. The fix isn't a louder export. It's mixing to the right reference level for the destination.

What is LUFS, and why does it matter more than dB?

LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) measures perceived loudness over time, weighted the way human hearing actually works. A traditional dB peak meter tells you the single loudest sample; it says nothing about how loud a track feels across a whole minute. Two files can share an identical -1 dB peak yet differ by 8 LUFS in perceived loudness — one sounds full, the other sounds quiet.

This matters because every major platform normalizes by LUFS, not peak. Upload something mastered to -8 LUFS and YouTube reportedly pulls it down toward roughly -14; upload something at -20 and it may be left quiet relative to neighbors. Mixing to the platform's target is how you keep your audio sitting at the same apparent volume as everyone else in the feed — without surprises.

These are the commonly cited reference levels as of late 2026. Platforms adjust their algorithms over time and rarely publish exact numbers, so treat these as well-established working targets rather than guarantees — and always confirm against the platform's current creator docs.

Notice the outlier: audiobook distributors specify an RMS range and a stricter -3 dBTP ceiling, not a single LUFS target. If you publish spoken-word long-form, you're mastering to a different spec than your social clips — one more reason to keep your source clean and master per destination type, not per upload.

Why chasing loudness backfires

The instinct is understandable: louder feels more impactful, so creators flatten dynamics with a limiter to win the "loudness war." On normalized platforms this is self-defeating. If you upload at -8 LUFS to a service targeting -14, the platform simply attenuates your file by ~6 dB. You don't get louder — you get the same loudness as a well-mastered -14 file, minus all the dynamic range you crushed to get there. The quiet-to-loud contrast that makes a drop hit or a punchline land is gone, permanently.

The winning move is the opposite: master to the target, preserve dynamics, and let transients breathe. Your track ends up at the same playback volume as the over-compressed one but sounds clearer and more dimensional.

A clean cross-platform workflow

Loudness is the last step, not the first. The order that consistently works:

  1. Clean the source. Remove hiss, hum, and room tone before any compression — a noise floor that's inaudible at mixing volume becomes obvious once a limiter raises everything. Should I master differently for TikTok vs. YouTube? Generally no. Both normalize toward roughly -14 LUFS, so one master serves both. The real split is video/music (-14) vs. podcasts (-16) vs. audiobooks (RMS range, -3 dBTP). Master per category, not per app.

My audio sounds quiet after uploading. What happened? Usually one of two things: you mastered well below the platform target and it left you quiet, or you over-compressed, the platform turned you down, and the lifeless result reads as quiet even though it isn't. Check your integrated LUFS against the target.
