0%Why most books never become audiobooks
Human narration runs $200–$400 per finished hour. For a typical book, that lands between $2,000 and $4,000 — before the first copy sells. For most indie authors that's the entire marketing budget, so the audiobook goes on the someday list, and someday rarely comes.
The result: somewhere on your hard drive is a finished book you've never heard read aloud.
"Free" platforms charge in distribution
The free alternatives solve the invoice and take something else. Amazon's KDP Virtual Voice creates your audiobook at no cost — at a 40% royalty, locked to Audible and Amazon, still a US-only beta. ElevenLabs' ElevenReader also creates for free, then sells through their own app at a 60% royalty to the author.
Neither hands you the files. You haven't gained an audiobook; you've rented one — and the platform holds the lease.
Own the master

Honest answers on AI narration in 2026

The honest caveat: meeting ACX's audio spec and ACX eligibility for AI narration are separate things — ACX's acceptance of AI narration remains limited, and no tool can promise you an Audible listing. Spotify, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and Kobo accept disclosed AI narration today; others gate it more tightly — INaudio/Findaway, for instance, currently takes digital-voice titles only from approved providers.
