# Make SRT subtitles from audio or video

AudioPod turns a recording into an SRT subtitle file: upload the audio or video (or paste a YouTube link), let it transcribe, then download the transcript as .srt — numbered, timestamped cues with speaker names. Transcription costs 220 credits a minute, so the free monthly credits cover about 22 minutes.

## The facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Timestamp format | HH:MM:SS,mmm — a comma before the milliseconds |
| Cue numbering | Every cue starts with its sequence number (1, 2, 3…) |
| Header | None — the file starts with the first cue |
| Speaker names | Written in brackets at the start of each cue — [Speaker 1], [Speaker 2] … numbered in the order they first speak |
| Styling | None — SRT is plain text, so players use their own caption style |
| Encoding | UTF-8, so every language and script survives |

## What AudioPod's .srt looks like

```
1
00:00:01,120 --> 00:00:04,380
[Speaker 1] Welcome back to the show.
2
00:00:04,900 --> 00:00:07,250
[Speaker 2] Thanks for having me.
```

## Where the file goes next

- YouTube Studio: Subtitles → Upload file → With timing; accepts .srt.
- Adobe Premiere Pro: Import the .srt as a captions track.
- DaVinci Resolve: Import the .srt as a subtitle track on the timeline.
- Vimeo: Upload under Distribution → Subtitles; accepts .srt.

## How it works

1. Add the recording — Upload up to 10 files at once (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, MP4, WEBM, MOV, AVI; up to 1 GB each) or paste a YouTube link.
2. Set language and speakers — Leave the language on auto-detect or pick it, and turn on speaker labels for more than one voice.
3. Fix the text — Correct names and terms in the transcript editor and save — downloads are built from the saved transcript.
4. Download .srt — Open the download menu on the finished transcript and choose SRT.

## FAQ

**What is the difference between SRT and VTT?**
Both hold timed captions. SRT numbers every cue and uses a comma before the milliseconds (00:00:01,120); VTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses a full stop (00:00:01.120) and can carry styling. Web video players built on the HTML <track> element need VTT; editing apps and most upload forms take either.

**Can the SRT file show who is speaking?**
Yes. With speaker labels on, each cue starts with the speaker in brackets, such as [Speaker 1]. Speakers are numbered in the order they first speak, so the person who opens the recording is Speaker 1.

**How much does an SRT file cost?**
The subtitle file itself is free — you pay for the transcription, at 220 credits per minute of audio (minimum 10 credits per job). The Basic plan's 5,000 free monthly credits cover about 22 minutes, and $1 of pay-as-you-go credit covers about 34 minutes.

**Can I get SRT for a YouTube video I don't have the file for?**
Yes. Paste the YouTube link into the link box of Speech to Text; AudioPod fetches the audio, transcribes it, and the SRT download works the same as for an upload.
